The first chapter talked about Dr. Watson. He is a surgeon in the army. He completed his Doctor’s degree in University of London. After finishing his degree, he was sent as assistant surgeon in Bombay in India. At that time, the second Afghan war was had broken out. Unfortunetely, Watson was attacked on the shoulder by a jezail bullet. Then he was carried on hospital at Peshawar and had a serious examination. Watson got his hand was wrapped because of wound that he got. Therefore, Watson was sent back to London. There, he stayed in the hotel in the Strand. Few days later, Watson chose to leave the hotel because he realized that he should pay much money to the hotel, in the other hand, he has to keep his money. Then Watson took to stay in less expensive domicile.
One day, Watson went to bar at the criterion bar. He was alone there, But suddenly he met his old friend. His name was Stamford. Stamford was Watson bestfriend. Then Watson invited Stamford to have lunch together at the Holborn. They shared each other about their life. Watson told everything about his adventure in India and he shared to Stamford to help him getting a comfortable room with a reasonable price. Knowing that, Stamford felt strange because he was the second man who asked for the same thing about getting less expensive domicile. Watson was corious and wanted to know who was the first man that Stamford told. Stamford said that he was Stamford fellow who worked at the chemical laboratory up at the hospital. He shared to Stamford this morning that he really wanted someone who wanted to share a nice room which he had found and which were too much for his purse. Watson was so excited knew it. He wanted to know about the man. Stamford told everything about his fellow. His name was Sherlock Holmes. Holmes was an enthusiast in some branches of science, he was clever in anatomy but Holmes never taken any systematic medical classes, but he was amased a lot of out of the way knowledge which would antonish his professors.
Watson really wanted to meet this man. Then, they went to laboratory where Holmes usually worked. Finally, Watson meet this man. Stamford intoduced Watson to Holmes and told that Watson liked to join a nice room with holmes. At that time, Holmes was very happy and wanted to accept Watson as his roommate. In the other hands, Dr. Watson did not like a noisy man, he likes a quiet circumstance and it was suit with Holmes characteristic. Then, Watson and Holmes decided the rooms at No. 221B, Baker Street. The room was a couple comfortable bed-rooms and a single large airy sitting-room, cheerfully furnished and there was two broad windows.
Spending a week with Holmes, Watson felt much corious with him. He really wanted to unravel to Holmes aims in life. Holmes was not studying medicine but he could answer question himself. Watson made a list about Holmes. Till he concluded that Holmes was a friendless man as Watson but Holmes had many acquaintances and those in the most diffrent classes of society. One of them was Mr. Lestrade who always came three of four times in a single week and so on. Many people came from diffrent society to consult with Holmes. Holmes was a kind of detective. He can analyze someone only from his performance. In the other words, Holmes was a genius man.
In the next morning, Mr. Sherlock Holmes, he got a letter from one of his friends Tobias Gregson. Gregson wanted some helps of Holmes to find out the murderer of Drebber. In the letter, it wrote that there had been a bad bussiness during the night at three, Lauriston Garden, off the Brixton Road. He said that someone saw a light there about two in the morning and as the house was an empty one. He found the door opened, and in the front room, which is bare of furniture, discovered the body of gentlemen, well-dressed and having cards in his pocket bearing the name of Enoch J. Drebber, Cleveland, Ohio, U.S.A. There had been no robbery, and there is no evidence about how the man was dead. There were marks of blood in the room, but there is no wound upon his person. Gregson wanted to invite Holmes to come to the house any time before twelve. Holmes read the letter deeply and Watson was sitting beside him. Holmes felt lazy, in fact he was a lazy a person. His roommate tried to make sure Holmes to help his friend. Finally Holmes wanted to help his friend, Tobias Gregson.
A few minutes later, Holmes and Watson went in its place. They were in big corious and they were driving foriously for the Brixton Road. Finally they could catch the place, but Holmes decided to stop a hundred yards from it place. Holmes identified sorrounding the house. The whole place was very sloppy from the rain which had fallen through the night. The tree was bounded by a three-foot brick the wall with a fringe of wood rails upon the top and against this wall. Holmes was not directly coming to the house and identifying inside the house. But he searched the data in the garden outside the house. Watson was very amazed he thought that Holmes will hurry coming to the house. At that time, Holmes was smiled at Watson that was the sign that he already found some important datas.
Then they came to the house. When they opened the door, there were holmes friend who wrote a letter to him, Gregson and he was with his friend Lestrade. They were waiting for Holmes’s coming inside the house. After introducing each other, They were starting to observe inside the house. Firstly, they came to the living room the condition of the house was full of dust and in mess condition. Gregson said that there was evidence about the murderer. He thought that the murderer prepared this case well. Then, they observe the body of the victim. He was dressed in a heavy broadcloth frock coat and waistcoat, with light-coloured trousers, and immaculate collar and cuffs. Then, Gregson found something which is connected with the victim. It was a gold watch, No. 97163, by Barraud, of London. And a Russian card leather card-case, with cards of Enoch J. Drobber of Cleveland. He found also two letters, one letter addressed to E.J. Drebber and one to Joseph Stangerson. The address was in American Exchange, Strand. So, it meaned that the victim was just returning from New York before he was murdered.
Lestrade had just found something important. He had remarked that the paper had fallen away in parts. In this particular corner of the room a large piece had peeled off, leaving a yellow square of course plastering. Across this bare space there was scrawled in blood-red letters in single words. The word was “RACHE”. Lestrade conclude that the murderer wrote a word. For some times, Holmes tried to observe all of things that has founded by his friends till he had concluded that a murderer was a man, he was more than six feet high, was in the prime of life, had small feet for his height. He came here with his victim in a four-wheeled cab, which was drawn by a horse with three old shoes. Holmes said that the murderer probably killed the victim by a poison. And for the word Rache, That was not a name of Rachel. It was German language which meaned “revenge”.
Finishing that, Watson and holmes e went away from its place. They took a cab to go to the address that Lestrade gave. He wanted to meet John Rance in his house, Rance was a first man who found the victim. Holmes wanted to know his story about the night when it was happened. Rance begun to tell story, At eleven there was a fight at the “white hart”, but bar that all was quiet enough on the beat. At one o’clock it begun to rain, then Rance met with his friend Grove and they stood togheter at the corner of Henrietta street, they were talking a lot of things. Suddenly, Rance saw a light in Brixton road house. In fact, the house was empty because the owner of the house was died long time ago. And Rance came in the Brixton Road, he wanted to make everything was just fine. He opened the door and found a body of man was lying on the floor. Then Rance went out calling his friend to come on the spot. Outside, he saw a drunk man. Holmes was curious about the man that Rance met. Because he could be the murderer. Rance told everything about the man that he saw at the time. After knowing that, Watson and Holmes backed to their lodgings.
They were discussing about the case. Holmes was confused, why did the murderer came back after he killed. In other hands, they found a ring outside the house. Then, Holmes went to the affair. He liked music very much. He spent a whole night there. Next in the morning, he went home and met Watson. They discussed about the case. According to his notion, The murderer left his ring when he took the victim to come inside the house. He did not realize that he missed his ring. He lift the spot and returned to take the ring but when he came there, some polices stayed in the spot. Then he pretended to be a drunk man in order to allay the suspicions which might have been aroused by his appereances at the gate.
When he could not find the ring , he should read a newspaper to find out the advertisement about the ring in the Brixton Road. And this morning, after coming to the affair Holmes wrote an advertisement to the newspaper. He wrote that he found a ring in the brixton road, and met Watson to take the ring. Then Watson understood and wanted to help him.
At eight o’clock the bell was rang. Watson got ready to meet the guess. Like what Holmes said that the man will send a woman to pretend to be the owner of the ring. The woman was very old and wrinkled. She said that the ring was her dauhghters had. Her daughter’s name was Sally. She was married twelvemonth this time and her husband will return to see Sally. Without any ring it could be very strange, that was the woman said to Watson. And Watson gave the ring to the woman but he asked for her address. Then the woaman went away from the room. Holmes followed her step to know the truth about the man.
At twelve, he just came back to the lodging and met Watson. He told everything that he got from the woman. Unfortunetely, the woman knew that Holmes was walking after her. So he just got a little information about the murderer. The papers next day were full of the “Brixton Mystery”. Lestrade and Gregson wrote the article about what holmes said yesterday when they met on the spot. They wrote exactly the same like what Holmes said, but they did not write Holmes name there. So, it liked they observed the case and got significant datas.
Few minutes later, Gregson and Lestrade came to their room. They came there because they thought that they already broke the case and made everything clear. For the first man was Gregson, he explained his notion to Holmes and Watson. Gregson identified victim hat which was made by John Underwood and sons, Camberwell Road. He came there and interviewed Underwood and asked him if he had sold a hat of that size. He looked over his books, and he said that he had sent the hat to Mr. Drebber who live in Charpentier’s Boarding Establishment Tourquay Terrace.
Gregson came to the address and met with Madame Charpentier. He asked her to tell him about her husband Drebber who was killed. She said that her husband leave the house at eight o’clock, he was to catch the second train at eleven and it was the last time she could meet her husband before he passed away. But in fact, Madame was not telling the truth, her daughter wanted to tell the truth. Alice told that Mr. Drebber had been with them nearly three weeks. He and his secretary, Mr. Stangerson had been traveling on the continent. Stangerson was a quiet reserved man but his employer was far otherwise. The very of his arrival he became very much the worse for drink and after twelve o’clock in the day he coukd hardly ever be said to be sober. Then Madame did like the way he acted then she let them go from their house. But one day he came back again to the house and tried to take Alice with him. In fact, Alice was still a young girl. Her mother tried to stop Drebber of taking her daughter away but she fell down and got fainted. When she woke up, she found that Her son was standing the door with stick in his hand and Alice was okay. Drebber was went away. Then in the next morning, they heard a story that Mr. Drebber was dead. From its story, Gregson had opinion that Her son killed Drebber. But he did not any evidence for it. But he was very sure about it.
The second, Mr. Lestrade began to tell about his story about this case. He gave information that the scretary of Drebber, Stangerson. He was killed at Halliday’s Private Hotel about six o’clock in the morning. It all began when Lestrade wanted to meet Stangerson this morning. He has promised to Stangerson to come to his hotel and talked about Drebber. When he arrived at the hotel, the roomboy accompanied Lestrade to come to room. The room was in second floor. When they carched it, the door was locked from the inside. Lestrade and the roomboy tried to open it, finally they broke the door. Unfortunetely, they found Stangerson was lying in the bed still with his pyamas and his body was full of blood. Lestrade was shocked and observed his room. He could not find any evidence of the murderer.
Sherlock Holmes sprang from his chair with an exclamation of delight. “My case is complete!”He said. The two detectives stared at him in amazement. He had in his hand all the threads which have formed such a tangle. There are of course, detailed to be filled in, but he was as certain of all the main facts, from the time that Drebber parted from Stangerson at the station, up to the discovery of the body of letter. He asked for some pills that has found on the pocket of the victim to the Lestrade. Then he gave the pills to the Doctor Watson to ask his information about the pills.
Dr. Watson explained that the pill were of pearly grey color, small, round and almost transparent against the light. From their lightness and transparency, He should imagine that the pills were soluble in water. Holmes then proved to his friends about his invention. He asked Watson to bring the dog that was sicked upstair. In this condition, he wanted to practice his analysis. He cut the pill into two parts. A half was saved in police box and a half was put in the saucer of milk. And the dog will drink the milk which was contained of the pill.
They all sat in silence, watching the animal intently, and expecting some startling effect. None such appeared, however. The dog continued to lie stretched upon tho cushion, breathing in laboured way, but appereantly neither the better nor the worse for its draught.
Holmes had taken out his watch, and as minute followed minute without result, an expression of the utmost chagrin and disapoinment appeared upon his features. He had concluded for a theory. The murderer gave two pills to the victim. One of the pill could be very dangerous and one pill was not dangerous at all.
Sherlock Holmes drew a long breath, and wiped the perspiration from his forehead. “I should have more faith!”he said; “I ought to know by this time that when a fact appears to be oppesed to a long train of deductions, it invariably proves to be capableof bearing some other interpretation. Of the two pills in that box one was of the most deadly poison, and the other was entirely harmless. I ought to have known that before I saw the box at all.”
All his conjectures were right. The dog was dead because of the pill that he gave into the milk. Watson had believed to his friend, but he felt the mist before he proved. In fact, Holmes knew all about the murderer. No one could expect that Holmes discovery this case so far. He went downstair. Then he came out with the arabian boy, Wiggins. Wiggins was a cabman. He worked for Holmes. He gave informations Holmes asked.
Dr. Watson was surprised, because he never said anything about this before. There was a small portmenteau in the room, and this he pulled out and began to strap. He was busily engaged at it when the cabman entered the room. Then, the cabman brought the big box. Not long enough, Holmes opened the box and introduced to every body there. Here we go, Mr. Jefferson hope the murderer of Drebber and starngeson.
Every body were shocked and silent just like a statue. They were amazing to Holmes invention. Then they really wanted to know the story from the beginning till the end.
All about Mr. Jefferson hope was talked in the part two of the novel. It told about a story that was happened in 1847 in Utah. There were a man named John Ferier and her daughter. They were lost in desert. At that time, their condition was unhealthy. They needed help to survive. Then came a sacred men group, they wanted to help them but in one condition, they should have the same religion like them. Finally, Ferier and his daughter, Lucy, took the same religion like them. The chief of the group was Brigam Young.
Then, Lucy and her father lived with the group who saved them in Salt Lake City. A year past, Lucy was falling in love to Jefferson Hope. They loved each other. One day, Hope wanted to marry Lucy. In reality, Hope had diffrent religion from Lucy. According to the chief of the group there, a girl might not marry with the man who did not has the same religion with them. But Young gave a change to Lucy to choose sons of the group of scared man. There were four men, and Lucy could choose one of them to be her husband. Two of four men were Enroch Drebber and Joseph Stangerson. They were coming to the Lucy’s house to engange Ferier daughter. But they coming were impolite. They were not giving any respect to Lucy and Ferier. Then, Ferier chased away Drebber and Stangerson.
Because of his worried, Ferier asked Hope to help Ferier and his daughter escape from the village. They were afraid of the police of Young will kill them. But they were still had time to choose the man who will marry Lucy. In fact, Lucy only loved Hope. When the time to choose was running out. Ferier asked for Hope to bring Lucy and Ferier escape from the village. Hope wanted to prepare some food for them, he went to market first. After finishing, he got back to Lucy’s house. Unfortunetely, he found Ferier was died and Lucy was missing.
Hope was telling his story when he was arrested in London by the police. Hope talked every thing about his life because he knew that he could not live any longer because he got liver. And he will die in a short time. Then, he told his story again. He said that he returned to Salt Lake City. There he had known that Lucy was forced to marry Drebber and in reality Ferier was killed by Stangerson.
After Lucy was dead, Hope followed Drebber and Starngeson. They left Salt Lake City, but they did not know if they were followed. Everywhere they went, Hope always came after them. One time, they stopped in London. Hope followed them by pretended to be a cabman.
One day, Hope found that Drebber was drunk. He took Drebber to the empty house. There, he made Drebber to remember him. He forced Drebber to pick one of two pills. One pill was death poison and one pill was not dangerous. Drebber picked the poison pill, he was dead. And Hope were bleeding because of his disease, he wrote a word from his blood “Rache” which meant revenge. Then he left the house.
In the middle of his way, he remembered he left Lucy’s ring in the empty house. So, he backed to the house when he came there. John Rance was standing there with his friends. Then Hope pretended to be a drunk man. He left the house without the ring because he was afraid the police will be sospicous to him.
In the next day, Hope were reading a newspaper. He hoped that there was an advertisement about missing ring in Brixton Road. Finally, he found it. He asked the old woman to take the ring and pretended that the ring was her daughters.
In other hands, Hope found Starngeson in his hotel. Starngeson had already known his friend, Drebber was killed by Hope. He knew about the pills that made his freind dead. Then Hope changed her mind to kill Starngeson by giving a poison pill. Hope took his knife and stabed into Starngeson heart.
That was all the story of Jefferson Hope. Hope was dead before the judgement day. He wad dead because his liver. In the next day, Lestrade and Gregson were famous because they wrote on the newspaper they could arrested the murderer. In fact, Holmes found the teory and got Hope in prison. In the other hands, Dr. Watson was interested to write a journal about his roommate, the way broke the case was amazed Watson.
